Dear friends,
It is with great joy that i share with you the news of the great start to the MAGiS'09 Africa program! Pilgrims from 12 nations: Poland, Hungary, Burundi, Tanzania, Germany, Mauritius, Malta, Zimbabwe, Australia, Ukraine, Cameroon and Kenya-were treated to a beautiful welcoming ceremony at the Co-Operative College, Karen, by the multi-talented David Ngigi-followed by the opening Mass, presided by Fr. Fratern Masawe SJ, Moderator of the Jesuit Superiors of Africa and Madagascar. Fr. Masawe was presented with his MAGiS'09 Africa t-shirt just after he gave the final blessing. Monday, 10th August, marked the second day of the opening Ignatian gathering-international experiment groups met for the first time and each received an 'African pot', as a symbol of the life-giving role of the pot in daily African life. Pilgrims arrived in the 5 experiment locations in time for lunch on Tuesday 11th August, and will share life and friendship with each other until the 18th August, when they return to Karen for 2 days of the closing gathering and closing Mass on 20th August-then will follow the cultural festival in the evening! I will try to post some pictures soon! Join us in prayer for all the MAGiS'09 pilgrims, that this pilgrimage may be for the greater glory of God! Blessings, Allen.

Hi everybody!
Some of you may remember this Spanish guy that last summer drove 1,000 km to arrive in Piliscsaba. I had a great time there! I just would like to recall for one second that... God loves us. Baby steps of the Magis in Kenya Hi everyone! Finally I get to let you in on how the Magis worked out in Nairobi! Here is the first instalment The rest will come soon! At the beginning of September 2006, I left Frankfurt airport, en route to Nairobi. With me was 6 weeks of different experiences lived and shared in Europe-more profoundly, Magis in Landau, and the Manresa pilgrimage-the latter setting out in Lourdes and culminating at Loyola. I had lots of ideas and suggestions too from good friends; and a little prodding too, to begin the Magis in Kenya. This had been my first baptism of the Ignatian spirituality. I had a certain sense of trepidation as to the possibility that I could help make Magis a reality. It seemed surreal. And so it wasn’t until Easter of 2007 that I finally got my act together and assembled a team of 5 friends to help me try out the dream. This was infact the first Magis group. Through a center for Ignatian spirituality in Nairobi, we started out on a journey- that of finding God in all things. Monthly meetings of formation in Ignatian spirituality that involved reflection and prayer soon led to practical planning with the help of two Jesuit scholastics and a Loreto nun. It was quite a challenge to find a suitable time in the month that would appeal to students in different parts of Nairobi, with regard to the varying academic schedules of the universities. In the end, we settled for the last weekend of October, opting for a short weekend Magis retreat.

Dear friends, I am happy to announce that there will be Magis experiments in Kenya leading upto and after the WYD08 Magis08 experience. Here are the details: October 26th- 28th First Magis City Retreat experience in Nairobi 'Welcome to Magis' This is a short retreat and mainly organized for Kenyan and East African participants December 8th-13th Social work experiment with orphans and in an old peoples home in Nairobi, plus cultural sharing. Nach dem Besuch eines [’magis]- Workshops in Speyer Ende Oktober 2006, der uns, Claudia Dawidowski und Petra Deigentasch aus der Seelsorgeeinheit Mannheim-Süd, sehr beeindruckte und begeisterte, versuchten wir, [’magis] in unseren Gemeinden vorzustellen und dafür zu werben, es aus zu probieren. Aber der Funke sprang nicht über. Dann, so zwischen Resignation und Penetranz, während eines Telefongesprächs zwischen uns beiden, plötzlich die Entscheidung: „ wir machen’s, egal, ob jemand mitmacht..“ Danach fügte sich alles wie von selbst: wir bekamen Unterstützung von unserem Pastoralreferenten, der uns bei der Organisation von Räumen behilflich war, vom Pfarrer der KHG, der uns anbot, für Gespräche zur Verfügung zu stehen und mit uns Eucharistie zu feiern . Peter Hundertmark half bei der Organisation und der inhaltlichen Ausrichtung. 11 Teilnehmer/innen trafen sich am Freitagabend. Sie waren bereit, sich auf dieses Experiment einzulassen. [’magis] wurde inhaltlich und mit seinem spirituellen Rahmen vorgestellt und wir versuchten, mit Gedanken zur Allgegenwart Gottes auf das Projekt „Straßenexerzitien“ einzustimmen. Der Samstag begann mit einem gemeinsamen Frühstück. Im anschließenden Morgenlob, in dem die Dornbuschgeschichte (Ex3,5) eine wichtige Rolle einnahm, wurde der Tagesfokus „…ist der Ort, auf dem ich stehe, Heiliger Boden…“ ausgegeben und die Teilnehmer/innen in ihren Alltag und in die Innenstadt Mannheims geschickt, um ihren „Ort“ zu suchen und zu finden und in Aufmerksamkeit zu verweilen. Sowohl die Angebote zu Gesprächen als auch die Krypta in St.Konrad als Raum der Stille und Anbetung wurden genutzt. Am späten Nachmittag trafen wir uns in der Krypta, um gemeinsam Eucharistie zu feiern – eine tiefe Begegnungserfahrung mit IHM…..

Liebes ['magis]-Team, liebe ['magis]-Begeisterte, ich freue mich sehr, dass ihr alle auf dem Weg nach Sydney seid. Das ist jedoch leider nicht für jeden möglich, so auch für mich, ich bin sicherlich nicht der einzige. Ich weiss von der Pastorale des Jeunes in Frankreich, dass sie während des WJT in Syndey keine Konkurrenz aber in Communio mit den Teilnehmern in Sydney einige Tage in Lourdes veranstalten - also JMJ für Daheimgebliebene. Da der Geist des Herrn nicht nur Down-Under wehen wird, würde ich mich freuen, wenn wir sein Wehen auch hier in Experimenten greifbar und sichtbar machen können. Vielleicht sollten wir mit der Diskussion warten, bis die Anmeldefrist vorbei ist (31. Oktober), siehe http://www.wjt.khg-frankfurt.de/. Viele Grüße Florian AMDG

Vom 29. Juli bis 7. August fand in Piliscsaba bei Budapest ein internationales Experiment statt. Geleitet wurde es von Schwester Mercy Thomas dhm und mir. Ich muss allerdings dazu sagen, dass ich aufgrund meines Auslandsaufenthaltes (Tertiat in Dublin, www.tertianship.eu) bis Juni 2007 gar nichts vorbereiten konnte und die Hauptlast der Vorbereitung bei Mercy lag. Mercy hat seit dem Weltjugendtagsprojekt ['magis] 2005 einen Kreis von jungen Erwachsenen aus dem Raum Budapest, der sich regelmäßig trifft. Im vergangenen Jahr hat sie mit einigen von ihnen auch an ['magis] in Landau teilgenommen. Ermutigt von Peter Hundertmark, der damals in Landau die Koordination innehatte, und inspiriert durch Marc-Stephan Giese, der im Februar zu einer Fortbildung nach Ungarn kam, wurden jetzt also Budapest und Piliscsaba Schauplatz eines Experimentes: Junge Leute aus 9 Ländern nahmen daran teil: aus Belgien, Deutschland, Kenia, Malta, Rumänien, Schottland, Slovakei, Spanien und natürlich aus Ungarn. Neben Erkundungen in und um Budapest und einem ganztägigen Pilgerweg, standen Begegnungen mit den Bewohner/innen eines Seniorenheimes in Piliscsaba und eines Wohnheimes für junge Mütter mit ihren Kindern in Obuda auf dem Programm. Wie immer wurde jeder Tag begonnen mit einem Morgenimpuls (Focus der Aufmerksamkeit) und meist beschlossen mit einem Rückblick in den ['magis]-Runden. Auch die Eucharistie wurde täglich gefeiert. Allerdings fast jeden Tag etwas anders und an verschiedenen Orten. Am schönsten waren für mich die Gottesdienste in der freien Natur: ein erstes Mal während unserer Wanderung auf einem Platz mit Fernsicht auf die Pilishügel und ein anderes Mal im Garten des Seniorenheimes mit ca. 50 alten Leuten.

It was a year ago when I heard about Ignatian spirituality for the first time. Friends from the magis invited me to join one of their monthly meetings: christian youngsters praying,singing and having fun together. Getting off the train at Piliscsaba and being welcome as if I was already an old friend, a member of the group I felt there is something more, omnipresent love and faith lived through and practised actively every day. From the first moment I felt that I belong to them and one day I would experience the same. It really happened during those 10 days of magis experiments.I got to know better the Lord, the other people and myself as well. I could find the Lord in everything and everything in the Lord.
So far ,when I wanted to talk to the God I always went to the church. During the pilgrimage we learnt how to walk slowly and silently in the forest or on the fields realising the presents of God and his presence in the flowers, in the rustling leaves ,branches and seeds, in the sunshine and in the breeze with all our senses. We could discover God in the hustle and bustle of the crowded capital,in our beautiful buildings, in the Danube and in the parks. Before these experiments I did not care about these things at all. Now I look at them from a different viewpoint. Even if I am in hurry I try to be attentive and appreciate the created world around me.
